The Mediterranean Diet

For thousands of years, the Mediterranean Diet has been a way of living in several Mediterranean countries. In 2010 UNESCO included the Mediterranean Diet in the representative list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity”, acknowledging that this heritage belongs to Italy, Morocco, Greece and Spain.
In November 2013, this recognition was extended to Cyprus, Croatia, and Portugal. The world of Mediterranean cultures and of all its ancient traditions arouses the curiosity and interest of those who wish to become more familiar with the culinary experience of a food model, associated with good health conditions which is one of its kind in the world.
This nutritional model was abandoned during the economic boom of the 1960s and the 1970s, as it was considered too poor and unattractive when compared to other food models coming, in particular, from wealthy America.
Nowadays, thanks above all to scientific evidence, the Mediterranean Diet is peremptorily re-arousing the interest of esearchers, health care workers, managers and consumers, and it is also widely spread throughout countries outside the Mediterranean basin.
The Mediterranean Diet is much more than a dietary regimen: it ensures respect for the territory and biodiversity, the preservation and development of traditional activities and trades linked with agriculture and fishing within the Mediterranean communities.
Thanks to the regional law dated 30th March 2012, a pioneer and still one of its kind, the Mediterranean Diet was recognised by the Campania Region as a food, cultural, social, historical, gastronomic, environmental, landscape and custom developmental model.
